Hard to save when you don't make enough to cover your bills, gas and food to begin with.

The smartest thing I ever did was to drive a cheap car (less than $10K used), and keep it for as long as possible (it is now 17 years old, worth about $3K).

Largely because I didn't have a car payment, I was able to pay my house off in only 8 years.

Car payments will kill you in the long-term, too many people are thinking about 'payments' when they should be thinking 'damage to my net worth'.

Don't you have to have some money to begin with?

It's not rocket science, do a monthly budget, and stay out of debt! And save 15% for retirement, also have an emergency fund of 6 months expenses.

Now, give me some advice for someone who doesn't drink or smoke, only eats out occasionally, balances the checkbook every night (no overdraft fees), and drives a used car. What can I do for the next 40 days to save money?

It takes wrapping your brain around a better financial situation, which should become a lifestyle shift for the better

I find it ironic that this commentary is sponsored by Bank of America whose charges are too much.  Maybe if the banks looked at their own practices, it would not be so bad.  Of course, the client must also be vigilant of their accounts but the slam the banks impose is bordering upon obscene.  I lost $750 to Bank America because of a mistake or lack of cooperation on their part.  That is a lot of money.

Secular Lent?  Maybe the Catholic Church has the right idea after all.

I think all these "suggestions" would fall under the USE COMMON SENSE category. Is this really the best advice the experts could come up with?

My motto is "Bad Habits Are Hard to Break'.  Nothing is impossible, but  highly improbable because if one has other bad habits like slide # 2 other than finances how can anyone start breaking this particular habit let alone any others?   In this case could that be a sign of OCD?  Point being is that some of us are just "out of control".  And that is a simple fact.
