Oh eBay, oh eBay. I have been a seller on eBay for many years with 100% feedback. Lately it seems like I am paying eBay more than I take in. We as sellers on eBay need to give eBay and kick in the ****! They lowed their fees only to add a FVF on shipping. Then there is PayPal that eBay owns. I want to share the following with everyone. I listed an item that sold for 450.00 with shipping of 12.95 for a total of 462.95. PayPal took 13.73 from that amount. Now we are down to 449.22. At the end of the month eBay takes their fees on not 449.22 but the 462.95 their fees for insertion and gallery was 0.85, FVF for shipping 0.78 and a FVF of 29.50 leaving me with 418.09. Between eBay fees and PayPal I lost 44.86. Bidders that only buy on eBay they don't understand the fees plus postage went up in price. You raise your SH customers say that's to high. You offer free shipping and work it in the price of the item your chance of selling it lowers. There stupid Seller Dash board should be hacked! But at last ebay has us by the seller balls! The government should take a close look at them along with their relationship with PayPal! They should allow us to take payment of our choice. I never had a problem with money orders or taking checks from customers who have bought from me several times. Just a note on PayPal... I like using PayPal for shopping because I earn a great monthly return on my purchases. Thanks for letting me vent. Peace!

Ebay is not what it used to be.  Used to be if you saw a product for $100 you could find one on Ebay for $80.  But its not even close anymore.  Take this item for example... S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 Keyboard from Madcatz.  Now look it up on the MadCatz site.  And then compare it to Ebay.  You will be amazed at what people are doing to this thing.. lol.  25%+ mark-up.  So in my mind a lot of new or newer items on Ebay are overpriced to try and catch someone that is hoping to get a good deal and not shopping around.

Not like it used to be and unless you are buying something that is old or vintage that is rare you should probably look elsewhere.

This is a cheap MSN trick--hot headline and twelve mediocre pages to click through. Whenever you see this arrangement you can bet the story is shallow puffing and not worth your time. But hey, that is the definition of MSN.com.

You forgot the Fees and shipping costs that are high. You make about 50% on the product and the other 50% goes to Ebay and USPS.  If, for example, you sell something that you brought brand new, you will never make more than 1/2 selling used on the original price. So your profit is never more than 25% if your lucky.

Have been a seller of coliectibles since the beginning. Rising costs of ebay fees and fees on shipping now consume at least 20% of the sale price of the items. I used to sell on consignment for clients. That means that I need to collect 40% commission from clients. Many items do better in yard sales than can be realized on ebay. For a long time ebay used to have a banner that read "where to buy everything at low prices" fostering a"Walmart of the auction world" attitude.

If you are a drop shipper from a factory in China I thinkl you still can make a buck with new items. It looks like ebay wants to phase out the collectibles market and its sellers.

Fees are a little too high.  EBAY should not take a percentage on S/H at all.  EBAY should also take their percentage after PayPal takes their percentage.  However,  If  you are a serious seller then ask yourself this question "where can I display my merchandise, have this large of a customer base, and only end up with 20% overhead?"  If you have this answer, "EXECUTE IT".  If you don't then get in the boat with the rest of us and hope that EBAY eventually finds the point of diminishing returns and backs off a little on the fees.

Ebay Fees are outlandish, I mean seriously what do they do for you as far as shipping goes, yet they charge you ( the seller ) a final value fee on the shipping charges. To recover this fee you have to raise your shipping charges to the customer who then complains on the review that you overcharge them on shipping or leaves you negative feedback, Ebay will only allow you as a seller to leave positive feedback, but a buyer can leave both, then Paypal refunds the money for all unsatisfied customers no questions asked without taking into account the seller's view, kinda sucks for the sellers.

Not only are the eBay fees extortionistic, the endless oppressive (to seller) rules and  restrictions often kill off sellers in just a couple attempted sales. Unfettered scamming buyers and page after page of Chinese junk bury and discourage many new and seasoned sellers alike. There are viable alternative sites like Amazon, Etsy, eBid and many others that actually value their sellers instead of seeing them as money trees to feed their greed. Never post anything on eBay worth more than you are willing to loose.

If you are a buyer, before hitting the eBay "Buy" button do a web search on what you are looking for. Too often what you want can be found on other sites for much less - the days of great deals on eBay are gone.

The REAL SECRET to making money is NOT SELLING ON EBAY!  Ebay is completely biased towards making it a buyer's paradise while sticking it to the sellers!  What started with Meg Whitman and her raising seller fees has continued unchecked and is now going to cost you about 15% (or more) of your selling price!  Ebay even (now) INCLUDES THE SHIPPPING in their calculations, so they take part of your shipping $ too - while punishing you if you charge a bit extra to cover it.

The problem with Ebay is that they are like McDonald's used to be - without any competition (in the auction industry).  The ONLY thing that will ever reign in Ebay's greed will be the day (are you listening Google?) when someone steps up and becomes Ebay's Burger King!  And for my liking, it can't happen fast enough!

I was a both sell/buy on e-bay, when i listed an item with the minimum price as I saw many seller to do it, the bids on my item increased only 1.00 each bid, and in others sellers they reached hundreds,  and at the end I have send my item not matter it was at a very low price in order not to have a negative sing.
But,  if you check the Bid History of others sellers that the item is current with bids, did not match how the bids are, their bids increased so much and too much.  e-bay before showed the real bidders, now just they appear with symbols or private buyers, I think they should show the real identification of they has on e-bay as before.

I agree with people posting here: The fees are too damn high. I am less motivated to put things on Ebay anymore because by the time you add up all the fees, there's not enough left to make all the hassle worth it.

Attention Roger Fillion and MSN/NBC: you stated in this article- "eBay crunches lots of data and offers market intelligence that can be very enlightening to would-be sellers."
maybe you could gather together all the comments on this article and send them to ebay for some crunching and elightenment from their would-be sellers. it would be much appreciated!

EBay is a Big scam !..they charge you a reasonable 50 Cents for most listings these days but then take 11% of the final price (That includes what you charged for shipping)...also paypal (Owned by Ebay) will take another 2 or 3  percent....it's not like the old days when you could sell your unwanted garage stuff and make money, these days you get raped by them and the sky high shipping charges you will face at UPS or Post office..BEWARE !!!..it's not worth it selling low dollar items !

I am so happy this article is upfront again. Although our post here will not change eBay rules or views. Like many here I've been with eBay since they started. It's not right to us sellers not able to leave the appropriate feedback on buyers. It doesn't let other sellers know on eBay their bidding history or habits. We as sellers made eBay what it is today and they over look that just to push their untested rules on us!  What is with eBay letting big retailers sell their goods? From toy r us to hp computers. This is something the government should look into because these retailers are avoiding taxes that they would charge on their sites or in store. On the other hand good for the bidder. But it all looks wrong to me. To sum it all up... eBay is the internets Wal-Mart! Destroy everything! lol Thanks again for letting me vent! Peace!

To follow up on my earlier comments, there is a troll named V_L on this blog that i suspect is an employee (or several) of ebay's who's job it is to try to do damage-control on criticism of ebay.  The problem is that anyone that has ever bought, sold or researched ebay knows that what the unhappy sellers (and former sellers) are saying is 100% true, and that ebay has become so greedy and one-sided in their lust to portray themselves as a buyer-friendly site that they have alienated (appropriate icon choice by V_L who is an ebay employee by the way) legit sellers to the point that buyers are finding the only people on ebay selling now (who are willing to give away 15% of their gross sales to ebay fees) are sellers so desperate and stupid that they are usually unable to satisfy customers at all!  The best thing I did (and any seller on ebay can do) is to GET OFF EBAY and get your own dedicated site so you are no longer taxed by ebay or subjected to their ridiculous and anti-business policies that take away all your rights as a seller.  Another big problem (I mentioned several already) is that ebay does not hold a buyer accountable for their feedback and offers NO FEEDBACK ARBITRATION at all.  In other words, a buyer can receive their products in a timely manner, as described, and STILL leave negative feedback, even claim non-receipt (despite tracking showing otherwise) and the negative feedback will be allowed to stand as long as they do not use curse-words to describe the experience.  The problem with this is that SELLERS FEES ARE DETERMINED BY FEEDBACK SCORES and thus, ebay gains from allowing negative feedback (warranted or not) to stand because they use that as an excuse to raise a seller's fees even higher!  This is just one of many asinine policies currently employed by ebay to extract maximum dollars our of the sellers and just another reason to NOT SELL ON EBAY!!!!

ebay has just come out with a new round of policies or better described as dictates. if you take the time to read said policies you get the feeling ebay is saying "we are god". made up terminology for new fees, higher transaction fees on anything that sells, ever increasing "buyer protection", but nothing that stops a buyer from blackmailing a seller over that ever precious feedback. and yes, pay pal holds up millions of peoples funds for x number of days while they make money on your money if you don't have x number of transactions on ebay. under new policy if you are on the losing end of a dispute they remove the funds from your pay pal account. if the funds are not available in your pay pal account they will take them from whatever sources you use to pay your ebay fees. they give a buyer an indiscriminate amount of time to return an item and will even send them a shipping label at their expense to do so. I have used ebay for many years with many transactions and 100% feedback(but not without a price). as it stands now ebay has become the last resort for selling anything. I will run something over and again on craigslist and  run ads in the local rag classifieds before it ever ends up on ebay. huge marketplace there, but by the time you pay the ebay and pay pal fees you feel as though you just sold your body on the mean city streets.  methinks msn was paid for this one!

The down side of eBay is the excessive shipping charges charged by some sellers.  To see excessive shipping fees regardless of starting prices is a turn off to me, and I simply ignore the particular seller.

I am a buyer and seller on ebay , if you  want to move a lot of product without the pain in the butt fees sell on Craigslist and reference your ebay feedback . Hands down I outsell on Craigslist a hundred times over , but the 100% feedback gives me more credibility . To be honest ebay really sucks with all there stupid rules . Like this one, I was selling an atari 2600 ,it had a box that was listed with it , Ebay would'nt list it unless I added the word BUNDLE to the listing title. I do hope Ebay starts to listen to it sellers . I know they dont make near the money they use to on me . And iI believe the word for Paypal in Monopoly .

I have been a seller since 2000 on Ebay and have had good luck selling there, but as for the shipping let me tell you from experience if you are going to ship something of value that could be damaged DON'T SEND IT WITH THE USPS OR UPS . If it becomes damaged during shipping and you have it insured they will not pay you they have a whole pile of excuses not packed right not enough packing material, the box is to big you name it they will use it, so if you don't want to get ripped off use FedEx it may cost a few dollars more but it is worth it in the long run they will pay your claim within two weeks most of the time within 7 business days. The Usps and Ups takes 30 days before they then tell you now and if you call them they talk to you like you are a idiot.

Do not even waste your time messing with ebay.  Ebay is a sinking ship. Instead of bailing water out ebay is punching more holes in the hull.  Bottom line here is that If you sell on ebay you are going to get burned.  EXAMPLE : Paypal (ebay owned) stole my old silver dollars after a disputed transaction where paypal requested that buyer send the silver coins to them for "inspection"  Then paypal claimed the authentic old us silver dollars to be counterfeit due to a toned color and said they destroyed them all !!!!  WTF ?  Thiefs and liars !!!  The best of ebay's sellers where also the best of ebays buyer's, most have left ebay now due to the higher fee's and lack of true seller protection from the malicous members. Non-paying bidders and lets not forget the one sided feedback system. no traffic = no sales.  Looks as if the only ones who make money on ebay now are the crooks that steal your stuff and ebay is the best crook of all them all.....  SELLERS BEWARE OF EBAY AND PAYPAL !!!!

I had to leave eBay over 5 years ago because of dishonest buyers. I enjoyed eBay for almost a decade then the empire crumbled. It was a fantastic way to clean out clutter and pick unusual items for myself and my collections as well. I made some decent side money as well. I was doing the storage unit auctions long before TV destroyed that avenue, garage sales, flea markets and found some absolutely fantastic treasures that literally put thousands in my pocket (i.e. a book I paid .50 for I sold for over $3500!!!) Yes that was the crowning moment but literally sold thousands of items a had a fantastic seller rating to boot. Then the scumbags would contest an item, send me an empty box and I was the one screwed unless I took them to small claims court...Not an easy feat if they lived 1500 miles away!

I had to cancel my account and unfortunately there was nowhere else to go. All of the other site just plain sucked. So hanks for becoming SkyMall Ebay, thanks a lot....Dicks!

Well, I read all your comments. I was going to be seller but changed my mind. That was five years ago. Thank God. I didn't lose $$$. But I was buyer for while til I get none in my mail I won and paid for it. I filed complained. Nothing happened. So I quited being buyer and read stupid make up rules few times over years.

Sellers and Buyers: Quit while you can. Save $$$.

And for you V_L, I see no vowels. Your name is EVIL. Stay out of the comments. You have no business butt in. Go back to HellBay..
